New VPS system for efficient power distribution to the server

Managers of data centers successfully distribute power to the physical servers, but the progress of virtualization with multiple virtual machines on a single hardware device has made this task more complex.

Researcher at  Duke University in collaboration with Microsoft has developed a system that monitors the consumption requirements of individual virtual machines and distributes power according to priority. Researchers point to the problem of distribution of power on individual virtual machines and its shifting between applications. The solution of the problem lies in a new VPS (Virtualized Power Shifting) system that shifts the power dynamicly between distributed components in order to efficiently exploit the total power range. The advantage of this system compared with existing lies in fact that it uses more control knobs and selects the best settings combination. The new system should be able to withstand sudden drops in power supply, but question what happens when server automatically shuts down and virtual machines relocate from one server to another still remains unresolved.
