Internet could be 10 times faster
With the number of users, time spent online and need for faster data transfer, telecommunication service providers are having hard time meeting the demands of their users. To prevent the Internet from just “falling”, a few renowned companies from the field have associated on a EUREKA project.
Alcatel-Lucent Deutschland, ADVA Optical Networking, Nokia Siemens Networks, Ericsson and Telefonica have contributed to the project by financing and helping local research communities in preparing new devices and improving existing ones. That way the companies have improved their services and avoided collaboration in coming up with an improvement, thus avoiding potential patenting problems. But have contributed to the project with a final product. As a result of the project, 56 new patents were filed and 21 new products developed. Bandwidth throw infrastructure that allowed 10 Gb has been increased to a 100 Gb. It has also been established that speeds can increase significantly by better usage of the existing infrastructure. That’s good news for Europe, where the amount of data that flows through the web increases by 40% annually. More information about Eureka project can be found at official web site.
