The Department of Homeland Security (USA) examines recent warning from two researchers who have identified vulnerabilities in the country's electrical grid. Adam Crain and Chris Sistrunk have found a vulnerability in the DNP3 protocol, which is widely used for communication in SCADA system.

Crain developed a program based on open source technology that allows him to prove the existence of this vulnerability. So far, he tested 16 vendors, which have all been vulnerable to this attack. Crain announced that he will publish a free version of the above security test. However, until that time he is offering his test commercially. He also states that most firewalls can't guard against this attack, which makes it even more dangerous. Although Crain released several security warnings and informed the authorities, most manufacturers have not yet responded to his warnings. More information is available on the website NY Times.
